Reviews And Recommendations

Below you will find the affordable irons that performed the best after extensive testing and use over multiple rounds of golf. These are the best budget irons available today.

Best For High Handicapper: Cleveland Launcher XL Halo Golf Irons

Cleveland Launcher XL Halo Irons

Cleveland Golf is well known for their high-spin wedges and the Launcher driver that was so popular in the early 2000's. We bet you didn't know about their amazing set of irons that are still available today.

What makes the Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons some of the best golf irons on our list is the mix of aesthetic appeal and utility.

These irons are great for high handicappers, providing maximum accuracy with your shorter irons, while the long irons are forgiving and easy to get in the air. Doesn't that sound nice?

What We Like

  • These are some of the most forgiving irons we have tested.
  • We love how consistent the feel and performance of these clubs are all the way through the set.
  • They sound great, both on the solid strikes and the mishits.

What We Don't Like

  • Slightly larger than we prefer our irons to look.
  • Some people find these irons feel heavier in the backswing due to the size of the club head. We did not feel this.

Are we telling you that the Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons will have you throwing darts with your short irons, hitting high draws with the long irons, and giving yourself more birdie putts?

Well, maybe with some practice. But we are telling you that the technology in the Halo irons increases your chances of doing all those things.

Our high handicappers on our iron testing team rated these irons the best. They are by far the best game improvement irons for high handicappers.

Cleveland Golf produces only high quality clubs, and we think these irons rank right up there with any of the other favorites on the market. Give them a try and find out what it's like to have more fun and shoot better scores!

Best For Mid Handicapper: TaylorMade SiM 2 Max

Taylormade SiM 2 Max Irons

As with other Taylormade clubs, the SiM 2 Max irons are a showstopper.

SiM i2 Max rons provide a ton of feel, speed, and forgiveness in a visually appealing build, and are backed by the pride and reputation of the worlds most trusted club manufacturer. It's hard to go wrong with that pedigree.

What We Like

  • These irons are backed by Taylormade's reputation.
  • We love how streamlined this iron is despite being a game improvement iron.
  • They sound and feel great on every shot, regardless of the strike.

What We Don't Like

  • They do not have the newest technology, although they are more advanced than most other irons on the market.

With the SiM 2 Max irons, you are going to get a high end forgiving iron with a cast club head and a cavity back design. They feel great, sound incredible when you hit them, and produce high, repeatable shots.

All of this in a reduced price tag thanks to Taylormade's habit of coming up with even newer and better clubs. These irons are the perfect set if you want a top of the line brand without breaking the bank!

Wilson Golf Profile SGI Complete Set

Wilson is another one of those brands that was once a heavy hitter in golf, and kind of missed on some of their technology changes. Over the last 5 years, they are coming back into the picture as one of the top golf club brands in the game.

That, along with a price under $500 and options distinctly designed for both men and women is what makes the Wilson Profile SGI one of the best golf club sets on a budget.

This is a complete set of golf clubs. Your purchase includes a 460cc titanium driver and matching 5 wood, 431 stainless steel irons that look and feel top quality, wedges that match the set, and a putter milled for precision. This is the perfect set of clubs for anyone looking to take the game more seriously without spending outrageous amounts of money.

What We Like

  • One of our favorite aspects of this set is that it is a complete set of clubs.
  • The irons look and feel great. They are extremely forgiving and will be a great addition for a large number of golfers.
  • You can hit every short game shot imaginable with the included wedges, and then make the putts with the precision milled putter.
  • The driver and 5 wood sound and feel fast, and produced very high ball speed in our testing.

What We Don't Like

  • This complete set only comes with 10 clubs, meaning there will be a few gaps as you become more proficient in the game.
  • Only one color option for each set (one for men and one for women).

The bottom line is these clubs are the perfect choice for someone who is looking to get into the game without having to rent or borrow clubs. You can learn how to become a better ball striker by using these, and will be grateful that you didn't spend thousands of dollars on some of the more in demand brands!

Lazarus Premium Golf Irons

What the heck are Lazrus irons? While they are not one of the big name brands, we are here to tell you that Lazrus produces a great cast iron. And when you consider the price tag that comes in under $300, they are even more attractive.

If you choose Lazrus irons, you will receive a set that includes 4 iron through pitching wedge with the option of adding a 2 or 3 iron.

Lazrus irons look good, feel great, and hold up to testing against some of the most well known brands in golf. They had very high launch angles and more distance than some of the some of the top irons from big brands.

They offer great value and they are the perfect option for people looking for the best balance of price and quality.

RELATED: Who Makes Lazrus Golf Clubs?

What We Like

  • At under $300, these are the best value irons on the market.
  • Lazrus irons are a good looking game improvement iron.
  • They sound and feel very good on every type of shot.

What We Don't Like

  • Lazrus doesn't have the brand recognition and trust of other, bigger brands.
  • Can't test them before you buy them.

The Premium Golf Irons from Lazrus is the perfect option for those looking to upgrade their set of irons at the lowest possible price.

You won't find these irons on the shelves at PGA Tour Superstore or Dick's, but we're confident that you will love the way the look and perform.

With the money you save, maybe you can play a round at one of your bucket list courses - or give your significant other a gift as a thanks for letting you play more golf!

Best Affordable Callaway: Callaway X Hot Golf Irons

Callaway X Hot Golf Irons

Callaway is a brand that is synonymous with high quality golf clubs. From the early days of the Great Big Bertha to their new technology in Paradym, they have a reputation for quality.

A few years ago, that trend was upheld with the X Hot irons. A slimmer look than most high level game improvement irons lends a huge visual appeal to this iron. Pair that with a smooth impact feel and top of the line sound, and the X Hots are a hard iron to beat.

And even better, they're affordable. Since the model is a few years old, the X Hots are no longer the "new and shiny" irons that everyone is going after. We are here to tell you that they perform every bit as well as today's newest irons.

What We Like

  • Callaway X Hot irons are a perfect combination of look and feel.
  • We love the hot face that provides maximum distance on every shot.
  • They sound great!

What We Don't Like

  • Older models of clubs will not include the newest technology.
  • Only available in the stock color.

Callaway X Hot irons are a surefire way to get the most bang for your buck.

Don't think just because the technology in these amazing irons is a couple years behind that they won't perform exceptionally well - they will.

We have tried, loved, and used them through this process, and they are a set of irons that work well for an experienced golfer.

Best Value Complete Set: Callaway Strata Ultimate Golf Set

Callaway Men's Strata Ultimate golf Set

The Callaway Men’s Strata Ultimate Golf Set is one of the most popular reviewed golf set on Amazon, and along the highest rated as well (4.3 out of 5.0). It can easily be the best choice for golf beginners.

Why? For under $700, the price you would pay for a new driver, you’d get everything you will ever need, and every item in this set was made with high-quality material and careful craftsmanship.

Let’s see. A full titanium driver with just enough loft at 12 degrees to provide maximum forgiveness for new players; a pair of fairway woods (3 and 5) with large sweet spots; a pair of Hybrids (4H and 5H) that are a great alternative to long irons, giving the trajectory of wood and the familiar swing of irons; a complete set of stainless steel irons and wedges (6, 7, 8, 9, PW, and SW) incorporating their High Flight Technology to deliver impressive distances and trajectory control; a putter that was precisely milled to perfection so that you can put more balls in the hole.

And to top it off, this set comes with a stylish stand bag that is both lightweight and durable.

What We Like

  • It is a very comprehensive golf set.
  • Its dark matte finish on the head is just right for me, YMMV. I like it matte because there is less sun glare and it’s sleek.
  • The clubs are well-made and well-balanced, delivering a high-quality sense to the product.
  • The included bag has a lot of space while being so light that enabled me to pack so many little stuff and still be able to walk around with it myself.
  • Comes with club head covers.
  • Very, very affordable, there aren’t many sets as comprehensive and well-made at this price range.

What We Don't Like

  • There is only one color to choose from.
  • Some people reported that their driver’s head comes off after a couple of uses, we did not experience this.

If you are looking for a complete set of clubs that provides tremendous value, then this is the set for you. It is ideal for anyone getting started in the game of golf.

Ram FX77 Golf Irons

Who remembers walking around Dick's Sporting Goods around 10 years ago and Ram Golf was everywhere? We sure do. We never took their equipment seriously because it was set up somewhere in between Titleist, Taylormade, and Callaway.

They look like a high level player's iron, while providing some of the forgiveness benefits of a game improvement iron. A sleek top line and under toned color scheme will have you looking and feeling like a tour pro.

Engineered from 431 stainless steel body with a 17-4 super hot club face for excellent ball speed and a high piercing ball flight.

We know it can be a leap to try a golf brand that was something of an afterthought, even at their height. But at $400 for a set that includes 4 iron through pitching wedge, this overlook and underrated set of irons might just become your new gamers.

What We Like

  • We love the blade like look. These are one of the best looking irons we have tested.
  • They feel great. They feel very similar to forged irons.
  • Available in both steel and graphite shafts - perfect for golfers with a wide range of swing speeds and types.

What We Don't Like

  • Not as forgiving as some of the other irons on our list.

These remind me of my Mizuno irons, that I played for years. A head that tour players love to look at, that launches the ball high and is full of technology built for distance makes the Ram FX77 an extremely under appreciated iron. Everyone from beginners to low handicappers will love these irons.

Best Cheap Hybrid Iron Set: Ram Golf Laser

Ram Golf Laser Hybrid Irons

The Ram Golf Laser Hybrid Iron Set is the perfect option for a beginning golfer who is looking to maximize forgiveness and minimize cost. Coming in at under $200, this set of all hybrids from 4 iron down to sand wedge provides by far the easiest golf club to hit with some level of consistency.

We know that these clubs look a little different, but you won't care when you start seeing the strokes come off your game. Every shot from the long irons to the short game shots off tight lies or out of sand is easier thanks to the size and wide sole of these clubs.

Our only real issue with the Laser Hybrids is the sound. It's not terrible, but they sound a little hollow when hitting the ball, which gives these clubs a slightly cheaper feel.

What We Like

  • These are the easiest irons to hit.
  • We love how efficient the strike is on short game shots. Super easy to hit them high and soft.
  • The perfect clubs for golfer with lower club head speeds.
  • $200 for 8 clubs is almost unbelievable.

What We Don't Like

  • We didn't particularly like the sound produced at impact. Sounds somewhat hollow and clanky.
  • Not the most visually appealing clubs. Big and bright, which some people may actually like.

The Ram Golf Laser Hybrid Irons feature an amazing combination of price and forgiveness. Whether you are a golfer with a lower club head speed, or someone who doesn't strike your shots very consistently, you can get a lot of benefit from these clubs.

And one other thing - you never have to worry about the Laser Hybrids rusting!

Best Value Taylormade: Taylormade M4 Golf Irons

Taylormade M4 Irons

Taylormade's M4 irons were far and away the best irons for the average golfer when they were first released.

A few years later, they are still available for purchase and the technology they bring to your game is every bit as good as it was when it was brand new.

We're talking about industry leading forgiveness, amazing feel, and lots of speed off the face. We feel confident that almost any golfer can benefit from these irons that simply make golf more fun.

What We Like

  • We love the forgiveness these irons give on the mishits.
  • The best looking game improvement irons on the market.
  • Full of technology to help you improve your game.

What We Don't Like

  • Carry distance not as consistent as we like.
  • Very difficult to work the golf ball.

There's no such thing as a perfect golf club. The Taylormade M4's come about as close as we have found.

Between high level forgiveness, higher ball speeds, and a strong look and feel, you will love just about everything about this club. Add in the reputation that Taylormade clubs carry, and there is no doubt the M4s should be the top pick on our list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the best irons for me?

Choosing the best golf irons for you takes a little bit of thought. First, you have to be honest with yourself and decide how good your ball striking is. If you are not a consistent ball striker, using a game improvement iron is going to be your best bet. On the other hand, if you are a higher level player, try a players iron.

Once you have made this distinction, it comes down to testing different irons. Which one look the best, and which ones do you most like the feel? Answer those questions, and you will know what irons are best for you.

Which company makes the best irons?

Common golf wisdom says that either Titleist, Taylormade, Callaway, or Mizuno makes the best irons. These are some of the best overall brands in golf. That said, it really all comes down to personal opinion and what you are looking for in an iron. Our experts prefer Titleist, but have played all of the other major brands at some point in their lives and been very happy with the performance of each club.

What irons does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy uses a variation of the Taylormade P770's that were designed specifically for him, called the P730 Rors Proto.

Do golf irons wear out?

Yes, golf irons wear out. There is no way to avoid it. Over time, the dirt and sand that scrape against the face of a club cause tiny scratches that accumulate and cause wear patterns. One easy way to minimize this wear and make your clubs last longer is to clean them regularly.

Do Expensive Irons Make A Difference

No, expensive irons do not make a difference. Any golfer can find a great set of irons that will allow them to play the game to their full potential for under $500. At the end of the day, you cannot buy a better golf game. It takes practice and dedication to become really good at golf.

Final Thoughts

Let's face it, golf is an expensive sport. With the skyrocketing prices of golf equipment, it's nice to know that there are still good quality options at an affordable price.

We tested and reviewed some of the best budget irons to help take some of the confusion out of your search for your next set. We hope that you find a set of clubs you love, and that keep you coming back to the game we have a passion for.

What's important is that you find clubs that help you hit more quality shots and keep you coming back to the course. With that in mind, get yourself a fresh set of irons, and go have some fun!
