Best SuperStroke: SuperStroke Zenergy Tour

After extensive testing on a Taylormade Spider Tour X putter, the SuperStroke Zenergy Tour pistol Grip is our top pick and the cream of the crop of putter grips.
Soft feel, amazing appearance, and enhanced feel on the greens are only a few of the many things you get from this amazing grip.
When using this grip we found it was easy to square up the putter face. The size of this grip promotes relaxed grip pressure, which makes it easy to make a confident stroke.
What We Like
What We Don't Like
You will love everything about this grip.
From the patented no taper design and the new Spyne™ Technology, to the soft feel and ultra comfortable texture, this is the best grip you will ever put on your putter!
Best Oversized: SuperStroke Traxion Tour 3.0

The Traxion Tour 3.0 is a straight grip that is the same size, top to bottom. The fat putter grip is perfect for bigger hands and for taking your wrists out of your stroke, keeping the putter face on line.
I tested this grip in a Cobra 3D Printed Agera Putter and I loved the way it performed.
What We Like
What We Don't Like
If you want an oversized grip that allows you to keep the same pressure in both hands, then the Traxion Tour 3.0 is the one for you.
There is simply high quality, comfortable construction and incredible feel that will make you want to practice your putting all day!
Best For Left Hand Low: Flat Cat Tak Svelte

If you are a left hand low putter, you know that a grip with too little material near the bottom is detrimental to your feel and makes it difficult to control the putter face.
The Flat Cat Tak Svelte is an innovative twist on some of the traditional non-taper grips. It takes the flat paddle in the front design idea of the original Flat Cat and uses a new, tackier material paired with a slightly different diameter to increase your overall feel without sacrificing the world class performance of their original grip.
This grip holds up to the demands of left hand low putting exceptionally well.
What We Like
What We Don't Like
The Tak Svelte is an amazing addition to the Flat Cat family. The increased tack and surface texture of the grip add to the feeling of control you will have over every putt from 3 feet to 100.
I putt left hand low and I tested this grip on an Odyssey Ai-ONE Square 2 Square Jailbird putter and I really liked it.
As with all tacky grips, it's important to learn how to clean your grips so they don't become slick and hard to use. You'd be surprised how quickly dirt and dust can build up on there!
Best Jumbo: Winn Pro X

Whether you have really big hands or you're looking for a way to really quiet your hands in your stroke, the Winn Pro X Jumbo grip is the perfect solution.
Winn is well known for the quality of their materials and their incredible balance of softness, texture, and feel. The Pro X is no exception.
This grip is a great fit regardless of how you hold the putter, and will definitely have you rolling it as well as you ever have in no time at all.
I tested this grip on an Odyssey Ai One Square 2 Square Double Wide Putter and it was much better than the stock Odyssey grip.
What We Like
What We Don't Like
If you are at the point where a Jumbo grip is what you want, the Winn Pro X should be your first choice. Make more putts almost immediately without sacrificing the comfort of your grip. Talk about having more fun!
Best Scotty Cameron: Scotty Cameron Pistolero Putter Grip

The Pistolero is Scotty Cameron's version of the very popular pistol grip. It was stock on some of his best putters.
It is designed for better feel, being bigger in the upper hand, the opposite of a reverse taper.
The Pistolero is a traditional Scotty grip that feels great and will bring that classic look back to your prized putter. It is the standard grip on the Newport and Newport 2 putters.
What We Like
What We Don't Like
If you are dead set on keeping the Scotty Cameron name on your putter grip, this is a great place to start. Be aware that you are paying top dollar for a putter grip that is comparable to the more affordable Ping options, but adds an appearance of value to your putter. I have this grip on my Scotty Cameron Newport Putter.
Best Midsize: Scotty Cameron Matador

The Matador is another variation of the popular and classic Scotty grips. I use this grip on my Newport 2 putter.
Many golfers love this grip for its increased surface texture and softer feel than the original Scotty grips. This is a common grip to find on the newer models of the famous putter brand as the in-hand experience has become more and more important to the ability to sell putters.
The Matador is another grip that is going to cost you a pretty penny, so make sure you treat it well!
What We Like
What We Don't Like
Here's your best option if you want a serious upgrade to your Scotty Cameron. The price of this grip is justified by the quality and amazing feel.
You will find the Matador grip on the new Scotty Cameron Phantom 11R OC putter, Scotty's attempt to compete with the zero torque putter crowd.
As a general rule of thumb, we recommend you only put a Scotty Cameron grip on a putter made by the famous manufacturer. Matching the brand in this way is a common practice for the high end grips that are specifically designed to be used with putters of the same name.
Best Pistol Style: Winn Dri-Tac Pistol Grip

Similar to its iron grip counterpart, the Dri-Tac Pistol putter grip from Winn might just be the last new putter grip you ever try.
The combination of soft feel, great surface texture and noticeable tack make it the perfect grip for sweaty hands. It's truly one of the most well rounded putter grips you can find!
What We Like
What We Don't Like
While you may not see these all over the place on tour, Winn's installment of a pistol shaped putter grip is truly one of the best.
We feel strongly that you will love the way this midsize grip feels, and even better, the way it performs!
Best Golf Pride: Golf Pride Pro Only

The Golf Pride Pro Only grip performed very well in testing and was the preferred grip of a lot of our testers.
It comes in three distinct shapes and they are color coded to distinguish them from one another.
The Pro Only Red Star is a pistol style grip with an arched front side to give your thumbs consistent placement on every putt.
The Pro Only Blue Star features and angled back and a flat paddle front that encourages the proper pressure points with a traditional putting grip.
The Pro Only Green Star features an oval rounded shape with a flat paddle front ensuring a consistent grip and putting stroke.
What We Like
What We Don't Like
The Golf Pride Pro Only has become a very popular grip with a shape to please every golfer, and it is available at a very reasonable price.
Best For Claw Putting: SuperStroke Traxion Claw

The claw - also known as the saw putting style - is a very different type of putting grip style that has some different needs.
The way the trail hand sets on the grip of the putter means that a thicker grip with a flat-edged shaped will fit better in your hands and make the putter work better through the stroke.
That's what you get with SuperStroke's Traxion Claw. SuperStroke grips really head and shoulders above the rest, and when it comes to their claw grip it is no different.
You will get all of the benefits of other SuperStroke brand grips - the durability, the tack, the softness, the technology - in a grip specifically designed for putting with the claw!
What We Like
What We Don't Like
Get this version of the SuperStroke Traxion grip if you want the best experience in claw putting.
SuperStroke brings you the best of the best when it comes to a grip that will work with you to maximize your potential as a claw putter - and shoot lower scores!
Best Arm Lock Putter Grip: SuperStroke Wristlock

This grip is for the arm lock style of putting made famous by Matt Kuchar and now being used by other professional golfers, like Bryson Dechambeau.
Our testers that are arm lock putters found themselves falling in love with this grip.
Just like other SuperStroke grips, the Wristlock looks amazing, has an even better feel, and is easy on your hands. The soft outer layer will provide a comfortable experience time after time, and the SuperStroke quality control team makes sure your grip will last.
The Wristlock features a Tech Port in the end of the grip so that you can add counterbalance weights or tracking sensors.
What We Like
What We Don't Like
Whether you're trying arm lock putting for the first time or you are a veteran of the style, the Wristlock is the best putter grip you can find.
We are confident that you will love this grip from the very first time you use it, and that you might even find yourself with a newfound confidence over those short ones!
How To Choose A Putter Grip
Size
The size of the grip you choose will depend on a couple of things.
First, hand size. As you might imagine, the larger your hands, the larger you might want your grip to be. On the same lines, there are better grips for smaller hands.
Second, a thicker grip is going to help you monitor your grip pressure and take some wrist action out of your stroke, while a thinner one is going to give you finer control over the club face. What does this mean?
If you struggle with your stroke getting poppy or handsy, a thicker grip might be for you. A thinner one is for those of you who want to have more control over speed and to be able to use your feel more than relying on mechanics.
Style
Different grips are designed to work the best for golfers with different ways of holding the putter. For example, a golfer who uses a traditional putting grip might love a regular pistol style grip, while someone who putts cross-handed might prefer a reverse taper.
Our founder, John VanDerLaan putts cross handed and he prefers the 2° Press Pistol Grip on his LAB DF3, Mezz 1 Max and LAB Oz putters.
Shape
Putter grips come in distinct shapes and golfers develop a preference for the shape that works best for them. Some are round, some with a flat paddle, some are oval shape and some are pistol grips. Some even have built in forward press, like 3° Press Grip on the LAB Golf Directed Force Putter that we reviewed. The type of putting stroke that you use can determine a specific grip shape, but it is largely trial and error to find the right one for your stroke.
Material
The material that the grip is made out of will contribute to surface texture, firmness, and weight as well as tactile feel. Material will also change the how tacky a grip is. Tacky grips are especially useful in situations where moisture is present for one reason or another.
Frequently Asked Questions
What putter grips do most pros use?
Tour pros use a variety of different putter grips. Their choices are usually based on a combination of personal preference and the options available with their equipment deals.
The most popular putter grips on tour are SuperStroke putter grips. Other popular options include Scotty Cameron grips and the traditional pistol grip.
What putter grip does Tiger Woods use?
Tiger Woods uses a Ping PP58 putter grip. He has used different variations of traditional pistol grips throughout his career, changing up the material and texture, but he has consistently used pistol shaped grips.
Are Fatter putter grips better?
A fatter putter grip is better for some golfers. If you have big hands, or you are trying to take your hands out of your putting stroke, a fatter grip will be helpful.
That said, they’re not for everybody. We recommend that you either find a buddy who has one and ask to try their putter, or make your way to a store where you can roll some with their demo putters. Chances are a few of them will have a fatter grip!
Are SuperStroke grips worth it?
Yes SuperStroke grips are worth it. While some golfers don’t love the feel of the reverse taper technology, there is statistical evidence supporting the merits of SuperStroke. And how can you argue with the putting results of guys like Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele?
How often should you change putter grip?
There is no hard and fast rule about how often you should change your putter grip. As a general rule, if there is obvious wear or damage that affects the feel of the grip. At the end of the day, though, if you’re still making putts there’s no reason to change!
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right grip for you can be a daunting task. There are so many different shapes, sizes, textures, and materials to choose from, each of which is best for a different style of holding the club.
So what matters most in this decision? Well, knowing what putting grip style you use is a great start. Pair this with an understanding of your preferred feel and narrowing down the options should be a breeze.
